The text following the ● is the description of the new codes and the text following ► is the parenthetical text for these new codes.

87636 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) and influenza virus types A and B, multiplex amplified probe technique.

87637 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]), influenza virus types A and B, and respiratory syncytial virus, multiplex amplified probe technique.

► (For nucleic acid detection of multiple respiratory infectious agents, not including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 [SARS-CoV-2] [Coronavirus disease {COVID-19}], see 87631, 87632, 87633)

►(For nucleic acid detection of multiple respiratory infectious agents, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 [SARS-CoV-2] [Coronavirus disease {COVID-19}] in conjunction with additional target[s] beyond influenza virus types A and B and respiratory syncytial virus, see 87631, 87632, 87633) ◄

87811 Infectious agent antigen detection by immunoassay with direct optical (i.e. visual) observation; severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]).

Per the CPT Assistant Special Edition: October Update, the following are the changes in the code descriptions:

Codes 87301-87430 were revised with the addition of “fluorescence immunoassay” and removal of the reference to a multiple-step method.

Codes 87802-87899 were revised with the addition of “(i.e. visual)” to the code descriptor to clarify the definition of direct optical observation.

All these new and/or revised codes will continue to be valid and active after the Public Health Emergency declaration is lifted.

We encourage our clients to read the CPT Assistant Special Edition: October update in its entirety for complete information on these changes/revisions.
