Beware of Fraudulent Email Correspondence

EMedNY, the Department of Health recently became aware of a fraudulent email to a Medicaid provider requesting payment of a Medicaid liability by wire transfer.  This email correspondence was sent from an email address that was not affiliated with the Department of Health or any other New York State agency and serves as an urgent reminder to always be vigilant before opening emails or completing actions requested within an email.

Here are a few best practices to safeguard your practice against potential threats:

Hover over Suspicious Links and Email Addresses

Before clicking on any links or responding to email addresses, hover over them to verify their legitimacy.  Avoid interacting with them if they appear unfamiliar or suspicious.

Collaborate with your IT Department

Share any questionable emails with your IT department promptly.  Their expertise can help identify and mitigate potential threats.

Confirm Sender’s Authenticity

Reach out directly to the sender through a separate, trusted communication channel to confirm the authenticity and intent of the email or document.

Question Anything Unusual

Exercise caution and question anything that seems unusual, unexpected or inconsistent with typical communication patterns.
